Angela Ahrendts Says Apple Employees Won’t be Upselling Customers to the iPhone X

Angela Ahrendts, the head of Apple’s retail business, said Friday in an interview with CNBC that they won’t attempt to upsell customers to the pricier iPhone X model, arriving in two weeks.

CNBC spoke with Angela Ahrendts, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Retail, during the grand opening of the major Chicago retail site on Michigan Avenue. The major takeaway of the many talking points is that Apple is going to try and stick with an “iPhone for everyone” strategy, and not so much “the iPhone X is for everyone, please don’t ask questions.”
 Internally we said the tagline was ‘an iPhone for everyone.’ I prefer that we ask you who you’re buying it for. If they’re 6 or 7 years old, what do they need? If it’s someone who’s leaning into something else, what do they need? We do that with Mac, we do that with iPad, why wouldn’t we do that with the phone?
Basically, Apple won’t be trying to get you to buy an iPhone X if you don’t need, or even want, the iPhone X. Upselling is the practice of basically trying to convince, or simply ask, that you do need that next product on the totem. Go to a movie theater and if you order a medium popcorn, you’ve probably heard something to the effect of, “Would you like a large for a buck more?” or something similar.

Apple has more iPhones than ever before to sell to customers, so it’s good to hear that Apple doesn’t have an agenda to simply hawk the top-tier option to everyone that walks through the door.
