Verizon To Bring 5G Tests to 11 Cities this Year

Between now and mid-year, Verizon expects to begin pilot tests of next-generation, 5G wireless services in 11 metropolitan regions across the U.S. Aimed at select customers in those regions, the tests will explore a variety of deployment scenarios.

At beginning of 2016 we saw AT&T confirming that it will start testing its own 5G service in select markets in the U.S. Verizon is starting to go down that path as well. The Big Red network has officially announced that, beginning this year, it will start making headway into its own 5G network.
Verizon has confirmed that it will begin offering 5G “pre-commercial” service in 11 different cities beginning sometime later this year. Those markets are:
  • Ann Arbor, Michigan
  • Atlanta, Georgia
  • Bernardsville, New Jersey
  • Brockton, Massachussetts
  • Dallas, Teas
  • Denver, Colorado
  • Houston, Texas
  • Miami, Florida
  • Sacramento, California
  • Seattle, Washington
  • Washington, D.C.
Verizon adds that the testing phase includes “several hundred cell sites that cover several thousand customer locations.” Verizon is partnering with a variety of companies, including Ericsson, Samsung, Qualcomm, and Intel as part of its 5G Technology Forum.
