Tim Cook: Apple Watch Sets New Sales Record in First Week of Holiday Shopping

Sales of the Apple Watch to consumers set a record during the first week of holiday shopping, Apple CEO Tim Cook said in an emailed statement to Reuters. Additionally, he says the current quarter is on track to be the best ever for the wearable.

Cook made this statement after research firm IDC released a report stating that Apple sold only 1.1 million units of its smartwatch in Q3 2017, down by a staggering 71 percent on a yearly basis. The report further went on to add that fitness trackers have been dominating the wearables market.
“Our data shows that Apple Watch is doing great and looks to be one of the most popular holiday gifts this year,” Cook wrote.
“Sales growth is off the charts. In fact, during the first week of holiday shopping, our sell-through of Apple Watch was greater than any week in the product’s history. And as we expected, we’re on track for the best quarter ever for Apple Watch,” he said.
While the CEO did not reveal any sales numbers, he did add in his statement that the Apple Watch “is doing great and looks to be one of the most popular holiday gifts this year.”

IDC report of a 71 percent decline in Apple Watch sales in Q3 2016 is understandable since the Apple Watch was more than a year old by then. And with the Apple Watch 2 being on the verge of announcement many prospective buyers likely decided to defer their buying decision.
