Apple Reportedly ‘Out of Standalone Display’ Business

Nilay Patel, Editor-in-chief of The Verge, has confirmed with Apple that the company has officially exited the standalone display business, dashing any hope that we might see a standalone Apple-branded 5K Thunderbolt Display. If you own a Thunderbolt Display, don’t hope for a Retina-enabled upgrade.

A couple of 5K displays can be plugged into the new laptop as well, but it looks like Apple doesn’t have any plans to launch a brand new standalone 5K display anytime soon. In a tweet response to a recent article published by Jason Snell at Six Colors, Nilay Patel told the world that Apple informed him it has effectively left the standalone display business.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any other details to go on here. Apple did work with LG to bring the UltraFine 5K display to market, which Apple even promoted at its event yesterday as the best possible external 5K display option for its new MacBook Pro.
