Apple Announces Q4 2016 Revenue of $46.9 Billion With 45.5m iPhones, 9.2m iPads, and 4.8m Macs

Apple on Tuesday posted its [fiscal] fourth quarter earnings for 2016, offering a look at its performance over the past 3 months. The Cupertino company came close to most of Wall Street’s expectations, selling 45.5 million iPhones, 9.3 million iPads and earning $46.9 billion in revenue. The numbers are still down year-over-year, however, as the struggle to find new growth continues.

Here are Q4 2016 numbers compared to figures from the same quarter in 2015.
  • Revenue: $46.9 billion vs. $51.5 billion, down 9%
  • iPhones: 45.5 million vs. 48.05 million, down 5%
  • iPads: 9.3 million vs. 9.88 million, down 6%
  • Macs: 4.8 million vs. 5.71 million, down 14%
Here are the comments from CEO Tim Cook and CFO Luca Maestri:
“Our strong September quarter results cap a very successful fiscal 2016 for Apple,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We’re thrilled with the customer response to iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and Apple Watch Series 2, as well as the incredible momentum of our Services business, where revenue grew 24 percent to set another all-time record.”
“We are pleased to have generated $16.1 billion in operating cash flow, a new record for the September quarter,” said Luca Maestri, Apple’s CFO. “We also returned $9.3 billion to investors through dividends and share repurchases during the quarter and have now completed over $186 billion of our capital return program.”
In total, Apple announced that it earned a revenue of $46.9 billion in the quarter, while managing to earn a total of $9 billion in total profit. As far as devices go, Apple sold 45.5 million iPhones, 9.2 million iPads, and 4.8 million Macs.

To compare, in the fourth quarter of last year, Apple sold 48 million iPhones, 9.8 million iPads, and 4.7 million Macs. Apple brought in $51.5 billion revenue in the fourth quarter of last year.

Apple’s first quarter of the year was a massive stretch for Apple, with the company earning $75.9 billion in revenue thanks to selling 74.7 million iPhones, 16.1 million iPads, and 5.3 million Macs. In the second quarter of this year, Apple earned $50.6 billion in revenue on the backs of over 50 million iPhones, more than 10 million iPads, and 4 million Macs. And in the third quarter of 2016, Apple earned $42.4 billion with 40.4 million iPhones, 9.9 million iPads, and 4.2 million Macs sold.
