Instagram switching to an algorithm-based feed ‘in the coming months’

Instagram today announced that it will now start showing moments on your timeline based on what the team believes “you will care about the most.” This means that just like Facebook, your Instagram timeline will no longer display posts from your friends sorted on the basis of the time they were posted.

Obviously, Facebook has been doing this for years with News Feeds, and Twitter recently launched a similar feature for Timelines. The concept is that users are being pushed so much information on a daily basis, that they need someone to sift through the noise for them.
The order of photos and videos in your feed will be based on the likelihood you’ll be interested in the content, your relationship with the person posting and the timeliness of the post. As we begin, we’re focusing on optimizing the order — all the posts will still be there, just in a different order.
Instagram will be rolling out its new algorithm-based feed over the next few months, so you are not going to notice any change in your timeline right away. The company promises that it wants to “get this right” and that they will listen to all user feedback that they receive regarding this.
