China’s Elite Hacker group ‘Keen Team’ working on iOS 9 Jailbreak

Good news today for jailbreakers who are hoping to update to iOS 9 this fall. Speaking with Forbes’ Thomas Fox-Brewster, Liang Chen of the elite hacking group Keen Team says they’re eyeing the firmware to release their first ever jailbreak.

Liang Chen, one of the member’s of the Keen Team told Forbes that they’re hoping to release their first ever jailbreak later this fall. The Keen Team are one of the most respected hacker teams in the world. They might not have released a jailbreak yet, but they’ve a history of hacking iPhones. They have won over $65,000 at the 2013 and 2014 Mobile Pwn2Pwn competitions by breaking Apple’s Safari browser.

They also recently released their Android PingPongRoot tool, which allows Samsung Galaxy S6 users to root their device without tripping KNOX, Samsung’s Enterprise security solution.

They might also reach out to the Pangu team, another group of Chinese Hackers who have released jailbreak tools for iOS 7.1.2 and iOS 8 – iOS 8.1. They don’t plan to work with TaiG team, another group of Chinese hacker, who released a jailbreak for iOS 8.2.

Chen said that they’re currently prodding iOS 9 beta, which was seeded to developers earlier in the week, and hope to release a jailbreak just after iOS 9 is released to the public. He also said that the team wasn’t interested in the commercial aspects of jailbreaking, and were more interested in the technical challenge.

But the 12-person-strong Keen Team (also spelled K33n Team) is up to the challenge. The group has won more than $60K in Mobile Pwn2Own competitions for breaking into mobile Safari, and they recently released a tool for rooting Samsung’s Galaxy S6.

The latest jailbreakable version of iOS is 8.1.2, but there has been talk of work on exploits for iOS 8.3 and 8.4, which is slated to be released on June 30. iOS 9 is currently in beta, and will remain so until Apple releases it to the public sometime this fall.
