Smuggler caught with 94 iPhones strapped to body heading into China

An iPhone smuggler was caught by Chinese authorities trying to making his way through customs with 94 iPhones strapped to his body. He had a “weird walking posture, joint stiffness, muscle tension” that caused authorities to become concerned.

Some of those stories were simply focused on the rise of smuggled handsets into the region, while also noting the fact that this type of action is quite common when a high-end device like the iPhone is under constant demand. Others, on the other hand, showcased the unique ways that smugglers tried to get these goods into China, including shoving the devices into Twinkie boxes.

However, now that the newest iPhones are now available in China, smuggling has not stopped. According to a report published by the Huffington Post, and citing a series of photos that were posted to a local social media network, a smuggler has been caught while passing through Futian Port in China with a total of 94 iPhones strapped to his body. As the images depict, the iPhones were taped to the frame of the smuggler at several different spots, including around the thighs and chest.

The iPhone has become a rarity in China, thanks to supply constraints, making the blackmarket a prime spot for profiters. According to the FT, an unlocked 16GB iPhone 6 is around $872 compared to $649 in the US – retail. 9to5mac points out prices on the black market have at times reached $3,000.
“The man was apparently identified only by his gait – he had a ” “weird walking posture, joint stiffness, muscle tension” and — when forced through a metal detector — tons and tons of Apple hardware around his waist“
