MasterCard is bringing Apple Pay to the PGA Tour

MasterCard announced on Monday that it’s bringing Apple Pay to the PGA Tour, starting with the Waste Management Phoenix Open in Phoenix, Arizona later this week.

Announced on Monday, January 26, MasterCard has revealed that it will be working with the Prom Managmenet Group (an entity that provides catering services to several different major golfing events) to bring “contactless payment options” to the first stop on the PGA Tour, which will be the Waste Management Phoenix Open. The tournament is set to kick off on Thursday, January 29.

According to the announcement, this Apple Pay option will be available at the concession stands, for both food and beverages, near the 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale:
“Food and beverage concessions at the 2015 Waste Management Phoenix Open near the16th hole at TPC Scottsdale will be contactless enabled through a partnership with Prom Management Group, which provides catering to 38 professional golf tour events, allowing golf fans to make payments using Apple Pay, the easy, secure and private way to pay. This will be the first PGA TOUR stop to accept Apple Pay, when it debuts for fans attending the tournament later this week.“
Customers using their MasterCards with Apple Pay will be eligible for MasterCard’s Priceless Surprise rewards.

Apple Pay is still in its early days, however data from November 2014 shows it’s making notable headway in the mobile payments space. Apple Pay now accounts for 1.7 percent of the mobile payments market after its launch on October 20, but still lagging behind Google Wallet’s 4 percent share of the market, according to ITG research.
