AT&T unveils 4G LTE-enabled smartcase with a microSD card slot for Wi-Fi iPads

If you ever wanted to buy a cellular iPad but couldn’t wrap your head around forking out an extra $130 for LTE functionality, AT&T has you covered. Here at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the #2 U.S. wireless carrier announced a new case that gives Wi-Fi-only iPads the ability to connect to its high-speed 4G LTE network.

AT&T has decided to help those with Wi-Fi-only iPads by announcing a brand new “smartcase,” which the carrier says offers quite a bit of features in the slim case. As revealed by the image above, the case does indeed cover the entirety of the tablet when it’s closed, but when it’s open it offers a nice stand to prop the tablet up. The tentpole feature of the smartcase is its ability to connect to AT&T’s 4G LTE network, which customers can access via the Mobile Share data plan.

There isn’t a keyboard attached to it, but there is a built-in 4600mAh battery, which AT&T says will offer an additional 10 hours of battery life. On top of that, the Modio smartcase will also offer a microSD card slot for expanded storage up to 32GB.
As mentioned before, AT&T will be providing versions of the Modio Smartcase suited for the iPad Air 2, iPad Air, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 2 and the original iPad mini.

It may not be the fanciest case available, but if you own a Wi-Fi iPad and want to surf the web, read your email and FaceTime with your friends on the go using AT&T’s LTE network, it’s at least worth consideration.

So what do you think ?
