iOS 8: Notification Center Improvements, Inter-App Sharing & More

Mark Gurman (at 9to5mac) has a new scoop on the known details of iOS 8 Notification Center, Voice Memos, CarPlay, Game Center, Messages and inter-app communication. The last one is interesting because the iOS has always been known for lacking inter-app features for sharing compared to Android.

For example, there is no way that an iOS user can edit a photo in an application and send it to Instagram without exporting the image to the Camera roll before importing to Instagram. The report says that iOS 8 can bring a potential fix for the problem.

According to Gurman:
Apple is said to be working on and testing functionality that would allow apps from the App Store to better communicate. An API is being developed for apps to be able to share data. For example, a future photo editing application could have the ability to push the edited content for upload via the Instagram or Facebook apps.
The debut of the API has been in development for the past couple of years, and it had been removed from the launch version of iOS 7 last year for unspecified reasons. With that in mind, it is plausible that Apple could, again, choose to hold back the functionality.
Apple has also been said to kill Game Center apps (only apps), on both OS X and IOS in favor of Game Center integration features in the games.

Also, Notification Center will be undergoing a few tweaks which center around a drop-down panel that includes a new view for ‘Notifications’ and the old view for ‘Today’, the former will combine all types of notifications, including missed ones that are provided in a panel called ‘All’.

Apple also acquired Cue personal assistant to bring improvements to iOS 8 notification center. It is said to be useful for retrieving information from Google Calendar, Gmail, Facebook and social media accounts The Notification Center can include information from the sources to give a personalized overview of user activities.

Messages would include an auto-delete feature for threads after a month/year to save memory space because the Messages app easily takes up device storage.

CarPlay will include support for wireless connectins between the iDevice and the car. In case of Voice Memos, Apple will more around some controls to increase their visibility.

At the end of the day, iOS 8 will be faster than iOS 7, and much smoother and stable.
